The flash point of oil refers to the lowest temperature at which the oil begins to evaporate and produce flammable vapor under certain conditions. It is usually expressed in degrees Celsius. II. Definition

Under specified test conditions, the lowest temperature at which a mixture of steam and air emitted from heating oil products flashes instantly when it comes into contact with flame.

Ⅲ. Measurement method

Depending on the different measurement methods and equipment, flash point measurement is divided into two methods: open and closed. The open flash point is always higher than the closed flash point, because the oil vapor generated by the open flash point tester can diffuse freely into the air and is relatively difficult to reach the temperature at which it can flash. Usually, the open flash point is 20-30℃ higher than the closed flash point.

The former is used to measure heavy oil products, and the latter is used to measure light oil products.

IV. Relationship between flash point and oil properties

‌Volatility‌: The lighter the fraction of the oil, the greater the volatility and the lower the flash point; conversely, the heavier the fraction, the lower the volatility and the higher the flash point.

‌Fire hazard‌: Flash point is an indicator of the fire hazard of petroleum products. Oils with a flash point below 45°C are flammable, and oils above 45°C are combustible. It is strictly forbidden to heat oil to a temperature above its flash point during storage and transportation of oil, otherwise it is easy to cause a fire.
